AFTERMATH >>

Of faith and belief ...
Across battered shores, dozens of mosques still stand, their minarets glinting defiantly in the sun - a phenomenon survivors in the deeply Islamic region credit as much to divine intervention as robust architecture.

"God's invisible hands prevents the mosque's destruction," said Mukhlis Khaeran, who saw the sea sweep away his home village of Baet outside the north Sumatran city of Banda Aceh, but leave the neighbourhood mosque relatively intact.

Was it divine intervention that left so many mosques untouched by the ravages of the tsunamis? >>>

The Aid Workers ...
Captain Larry Burt, commander of a helicopter air wing on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln: "I've never seen anything like this. We've seen bodies 20 miles out to sea. You just cannot describe it."

ALL ABOUT TSUNAMIS >>
Usually caused by a massive earthquake under the sea, tsunamis are in effect a series of travelling ocean waves which can wreak severe destruction on low lying coastal areas.
According to US geophysicists, the earthquake that unleashed deadly tsunami waves on Asia, was so powerful, it made the earth wobble on its axis and permanently altered the regional map.
According to one expert, it may have moved some of the smaller islands off Sumatra's coast, by as much as 20 metres and USGS. Expert Ken Hudnut told the AFP news agency, that a 20-metre shift is considered a lot of a slip. He says the north-western tip of the Indonesian territory of Sumatra may also have shifted to the south-west by around 36 metres.

Another expert at the National Earthquake Information Centre in Golden Colorado, said it was more likely the islands off Sumatra had risen higher out of the sea.

Assoc Prof Yong Lu, an Earthquake Engineering Expert from Nanyang Technological University said, "You have an earthquake which causes large movements of the seabed, so when you have the seabed moving up and down quickly then you create a huge body of massive tidal wave."

The Ministry of Manpower urges all employers of foreign workers from affected countries to show compassion and patience, and to assist their workers whose families may have been affected by the catastrophe. This includes allowing workers to contact their families back home and granting leave of absence if requested. MOM also requests that employers show understanding towards local workers whose household help may have been disrupted because of affected foreign domestic workers. MOM will ease administrative measures for foreign workers who need to take urgent leave.
